Three seems to have been one of the magic numbers last night at the Irish Dance Teachers Association of North America - Southern Region Irish Dancing Championships!  Three ladies from Drake Irish Dance swept the solo competitions with Amanda Carpenter, Christina Deacy and Catie Foley all clinching the titles for Senior Ladies, Ladies under 20 and Ladies under 19.  Catie Foley is the defending champion for the region, having also placed 4th at the North American Irish Dancing Championships in July.

Three young men also rocked the stage, winning championships for Senior Men, Men under 20 and Men under 18.  Jason Hays and Alex Mowatt-Larssen, both from McTeggart, defended their 2010 regional titles and Colin Barkell from Maple earned the Senior Men title.  To add to the excitement, Hays and Mowatt-Larssen were part of McTeggart's 15 & Over Choreography team which won for the second year in a row!

Among the toughest competitions of all the North American regions, every round is uncomfortably close with friendly rivals vying to keep or claim titles.  The oldest of the competitors, most of the dancers in these competitions have been sharing the stage, the spotlight, the glory and the disappointment for ten years or more.

Southern Region Irish Dancing Championship Friday - Results and Photos

at the Southern Region  Irish Dancing Championships.

The Irish Dance Teachers Association of North America Southern Region is hosting the last of seven North American regional Irish dancing championships this weekend in Orlando, Florida. Teachers and Irish dancing families from Texas to Florida and Maryland to Mexico converged upon the J.W. Marriot Grand Lakes starting Thursday evening to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Southern Region's Irish dancing championships.

Follow @FeisAmerica on Twitter and visit our fanpage on wwwFeisAmeria.com for up to the minute results all weekend long!

Friday, solo competitions for children had emotions running high, with boys and girls as young as 6 and up to age 13, dancing reels, slip jigs, treble jigs and hornpipes, with the top 50% in each group going on to perform a contemporary set piece.  A total of nine adjudicators - three for each round - scored and ranked the dancers, and after all results were tabulated, a packed ballroom cheered and clapped and whooped it up.

World Irish Dancing Championship and North American Irish Dancing Championship qualifiers were announced, and placements were called in reverse order, leading to the new Southern Region Irish Dancing Champion for each age group climbing the podium. In the end, seven regional Irish dancing championship titles were defended, with five competitions seeing a shift on the podium with a new regional Irish dancing champion on top.

Congratulations to all the dancers, teachers and families from your friends at Feis America, North America's favorite Irish dancing magazine!  We also send our warmest regards to those who qualified to compete, but were not able to dance because of an injury or other issue - you were sorely missed.

Eastern Canada Irish Dancing Championships full premiere official results - VIDEO

Irish dance competitors
Eastern Canada, like most of the other regions of the Irish Dance Teachers Association of North America, encourages the newest and youngest Irish dancers to participate in the annual regional championships.

In Eastern Canada, these competitions are called Premiere Competitions, and dancers are recommended by their teachers and entered by age group.

Unlike the solo competitions at the champion level which determine World Irish Dancing Championships and North American National Irish Dancing qualifications this is considered an important practice in a competitive Irish dancer's journey from grades to champion.

Often, an Irish dancer's entire family travels to the venue for the regional championships, and welcomes the opportunity for its newer or younger dancers to participate in this prestigious event.  Traditional costumes and traditional set dances, such as St. Patrick's Day, Job of Journeywork and Blackbird are performed by three dancers at a time in front of a panel of certified adjudicators.

This year's Eastern Canadian Regional Irish Dancing Championships were held at the Westin in Ottawa.  Peter Moran and his team of expert tabulators kindly provided Feis America, North America's favorite Irish dancing magazine, with official results and we are pleased to share the Premiere Competition champions and placements with our readers here on Go Feis! The Irish Dance Blog on Irish Central.

Congratulations to all who placed, especially champions Jacklynn Bowdery, Madison Banting, Eimear Ward, Leah McIver, Amanda Kelly and Madison Sanders!

Mid Atlantic Irish Dancing Championship Team Results Top Five

Mid-Atlantic Regional Irish Dancing Championship Team Results!

The team competitions at ANY regional Irish dancing championship are always the most hectic and most fun part of the whole event.  Dancers who may or may not have competed in solo competitions join up with their dance classmates, dress as alike as humanly possible and move as one unit throughout the venue.  One can read the lips of the littlest leaders as they count off during practice and siblings who have been paired together in a mixed ceili may well start a short-lived battle.  Like the fictional Madeline and her two straight lines of little girls in Paris, dancers are seen holding hands as they make their way around the ballrooms and are kept busy with parents and young teachers while waiting their turn on stage.  The older dancers are truly as delightful - so many have been dancing ceili together since a young age that they are like mature couples at a family wedding!  The adult competitions at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Irish Dancing Championships are well-subscribed and from young to old, there are hundreds of teams and close to a thousand team members on site on team day.
